I wonder what happens when they get to Lesson Zero. The ball scene is pretty creepy to.

It's still a Highly Visible Ninja, I suppose.

I've been ninja'd by hours before. Thread Hopping does that.

Hmm... something else. Those Japanese commenters don't seem to like Knight!Spike. What do they mean exactly by "too American?"

@story: That is a good question. The scene is probably creepy based purely on the visual aspect, but I wonder if there are any nuances in language that may add more creepy to the mix.

I was confused by that too. Can anyone explain it?

@Ed: I say it depends on whether there's any funny characters for that part. Kanji and hanzi have a lot of overlap, since the Japanese adopted our characters too.

Now watching: DeceasedCrab playing the La-Mulana remake. Imagine a Daring Do total conversion using the La Mulana engine :D

I love that we have a whole page just for Daring Do! She is best double fictional pony.

But can someone explain what was "American" about a knight in shining armor? I think I may be woefully misinformed about my own national stereotypes.

Yeah, Japan has more or less steered clear of the big, bulky types for anyone except brutish villains for a long time now. Even long-runners that used to use that style back in the 80's and 90's, like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, don't anymore.

So they like their heroes lean. That explains quite a bit.

Probably shorthand for saying "Too Western" or something, I'm sure we can construe something about their perception of the US but what do we know of their sense of the UK?

Oh hi guys, been a while. I'd have more art but I'm trying to resist the temptation and stay the Doctor Who drawing course.

I guys that's why the guys in Final Fantasy tend to look like girls. I don't really see the appeal of Bishies most of the time. It's so true in my case, I guess, cause I prefer American comic book guys.

[up]What's a "doya" face again?

@Condo, Mousa: Doya: From “Dou ya/dou da” = “How am I doing?”. A doya-face is a particularly smug face you do when you’re striking a pose or showing off.

The male protagonists I make up in my head all tend towards lean and handsome as well. But then again, my villains aren't the big hulking types either.

Oh, so, like, they have a word for that? I feel a bizarre etymology coming on...

I think that Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon is a good trope for bad guys, too. The Serial Killer in Dirty Harry is perfect.

Yup! And for those curious, the difference between 'ya' and 'da' is Kansai Regional Accent and regular Tokyo-ben.

^Not really. It's just a shortening of the phrase 'how is it' or 'how am I doing'.

Hmm, kind of reminds me of typical dismissal of heroic "bishies" these days.

I'd prefer a middle ground myself.
